Reinstalling Windows and Applications |
|
Why Reinstall Windows?
Windows gets clogged up with old software, especially if you install, uninstall and reinstall applications frequently, which tends to happen a good deal when you mix an Internet connection and general curiosity. Uninstalled applications occasionally leave bloated "tools" installed and more often large amounts of data in the Registry, your system background can become weighed down with tasks that load silently at start-up, essential system programs can be forced to perform non-essential cycles induced by other installed/uninstalled software. It's hard to rectify all these problems through tweaking alone, and due to the way Windows was designed the best option is to simply start again. Viruses and spyware can also damage a system to such an extent that repairing Windows is not a realistic option and re-building from scratch is the only way to proceed.

|
A "Clean" Install.
We have established that reinstalling Windows will give your computer a fresh turn of speed, and can solve a myriad of software related problems. However this is only really the case if the reinstallation is a "clean" one and this means a new format of your hard-disc and the loss of all the programs and data contained therein.

|
Saving and Replacing your Files.
Replacing the documents that you have created, such as typed text, email, photos and music is usually not a problem. This data can be moved onto another storage device before installing Windows and then moved back to the system after the new install. Saving your contacts information, internet explorer bookmarks and other "settings" is not difficult providing you know how to do it, but it certainly isn't as easy as copying files and folders and many people simply forget to do it and it can be very annoying to have to start entering addresses and other information all over again.

|
Replacing the Operating System and Applications.
This is technically a simple matter but the procedure is often made complicated because of the "human factor" and a lack of understanding of what "installing" programs actually means.
Programs are not simply files in folders that can be backed up like documents and then replaced after the new install. Programs are "installed" and the installing is done by using a special "installer" programs which put a multitude of different files in different places. Special "keys" are also added to the registry; a process that is made invisible to users by design.

Reinstalling Windows: Understanding what I can and can not do.
Backing up your documents, photos and music really isn't difficult and can often be an automatic process providing you have a good "system" for doing so already in place. Unfortunately, so many have had to learn the "hard way". I can show you how to protect your valuable data and show you how to back up onto DVD or create an automatic process to preserve the whole contents of your hard drive. Unfortunately a Windows installation doesn't last forever. Have you ever wished that you could take a "snapshot" of your PC when it's in the peak of health and then simply return it to that state when needed? It isn't difficult and I can teach you how to do it.

The Windows Installation Software.
Many companies will sell a computer with Windows pre-installed and then provide a "recue" disk which can be theoretically used to "reset" Windows to the same state that it was in at the time of purchase. It is important to realise however, that this "rescue" disk is NOT the same as a Windows Installation disk and that it can not be used to perform a "clean" installation of Windows. Many people confuse this "rescue" disk with an installation disk and are consequently disappointed when I arrive and tell them that I can't use it to reinstall Windows. If Windows is to be reinstalled, you MUST have a Windows Installation disk and as all such disks are "married" to the alphanumeric code, this disk is NOT something I can provide. Of course it is always possible to buy a new copy of Windows and install that but customers quite rightly ask "Why should I buy Windows again when it was included in part of the original price of the computer?" Well, I'm afraid the answer is that if the company did not provide you with the Windows installation disk then you didn't get what you paid for and that is something for you to discuss with your vendor. I would never buy a computer without the full installation disk but many people simply do not know that this is important and only discover their mistake years after they have purchased the computer and when it is too late to do anything about is. The practice of a vendor not supplying an installation disk at the point of sale is unfortunately a common problem but, as I am sure you'll appreciate, not one I am able to help with.

|
The Windows Licence Key.
Many people DO have an installation disk but their licence key has been lost. A reputable vendor should physically attach it to the PC but many do not and when it is attached it is often lost because people don't like to have an ugly sticker on their shiny new computer and have peeled it off the case and discarded it. If you fall into this category then all may not be lost. A good vendor will also make sure that a copy of this key is included in the documentation. It will look something like this: "CM52Q-RPP49-WW93S-KP03D-9YYSP". The key is unique to your installation disk and unfortunately if I don't have this key, I won't be able to reinstall Windows for you.

Reinstalling Your Applications. Application programs like Word, Excel and Outlook also need to be installed. Some, such as Outlook Xpress and Windows Media Player are included as part of the Windows Operating System and consequently no cost is incurred installing them. However, many common applications are "extras" which one has to pay for. The most common "extras" are Outlook, Word and Excel and these programs are part of Microsoft's Office Suite which currently retails at £169.00.
Please understand that in order for me to reinstall these programs, both the Microsoft Office Suite installation disk and a key similar to that used for installing Windows are needed.
Unfortunately many people no longer have the disk and/or key and are surprised when I am unable to reinstall Word without them incurring costs. A typical situation for me is that Word has been installed by the IT department of a company that my customer no longer works for and consequently they have neither intsallation disk nor licence key. Another typical situation is that an illegal copy of a program has been installed by a friend and again, there is neither disk nor licence key. |
|
Please Note .
To conclude, please understand that that re-installing Windows and applications is a simple technical procedure that I have performed so many times and one that I almost could do with my eyes closed. If there are any re-installation problems they usually occur because of "the human factor". I've spoken with countless customers on the phone who assure me that they have the disks and keys, only to find that this is not the case and I am unable to help without them incurring further cost. Please don't be one of these people. I genuinely enjoy helping and there is nothing worse for me than discovering there is nothing I can do to help. |
